Subject: RE: English and the school time table]
Dear Steve,
Haven't answered anyone in an age, however...this seemed
appropriate, since I believe your school begins from 7th grade.
If not, don't read on. We had to have double hours for all grades
a few years ago...total disaster for the lower grades. We know,
theoretically, that a number of "injections" of language over time
is preferable, especially in the early stages. We now have school
policy, 7th and 8th grade NO double lesson, 9th grade, only once
and if possible, none. From 10th to 12th, again, only one double
lesson. To reinforce: the double lessons came as part of the
time table solution, not as the correct/right thing for teaching a
language.
Yours,
Terry Benor

Our school (Brenner Regional High) is dicussing changes in the way the school time table is set up. The suggestion is to have as many double teaching hours as possible. For most of our classes this would mean that English would be taught in double lessons twice a week. One of the arguments put forward is that this is how it is done in most schools in Israel.
I would really appreciate hearing opinions and experience of high school teachers on this issue.
