Not to mention the fact that many students don't live within walking distance of school. My kids' school is a 15-minute drive (this is good -- it used to be 25 minutes until they opened a new road). They get to and from school by bus (provided by the local council). In addition, there are lots of kids from surrounding kibbutzim and moshavim who study with them. Imagine the logistics of sending all these kids home for lunch and then bringing them all back to school!
