---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: byk <byk@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: more modular bagrut Those in the ministry who say that they discourage the taking of bagrut modules in 10th grade are no doubt honest. But of course, since it is not illegal to take the exam in 10th grade, there is nothing they can do to stop it. However principled English teachers are, there are forces at work that make starting the modules early hard to resist. As to the Meitzav, I also believe that if the Ministry must know the state of the nation, then let it come upon the students as, in the words of Oscar Wllde. "as a surprise, pleasant or unpleasant as the case may be", announced to the schools in question a month beforehand, anywhere betwween 5th and 8th grade. Less time would thus be wasted preparing for the test. My only reservation is in answer to Judy Freedman. I know from experience how wonderful and motivating success is to pupils who have always failed. On the other hand, I object to the language of the tests themselves, particularly A,B and C, which contain much which the students will not have learned well, like present perfect, and thus necessitates teaching test strategies. I know they can be learned, and lead to success - in the exam, but not in knowing the language. I'd rather they learned the language, with a test that reflects that knowlege.
