All the celebrations marking the Gymnasia Herzliya school's centennial aren't helping to wipe away principal Chana Ne'eman's profound disappointment with the education system, which she says produces students lacking knowledge and abilities.

This month, the Gymnasia Herzliya comprehensive high school is marking its centennial. Its principal, Chana Ne'eman, who assumed the post just a year ago, previously ran the secondary education branch in the Education Ministry. Working for a year at Gymnasia Herzliya hasn't changed her mind about the general level of Israel's school system and its products: She says that the system is "a collection of subjects" with no overriding purpose, which therefore produces youths who have no core values and are not involved with or committed to anything. She says the meagerness of the Israeli pupil's knowledge derives from the fact that the system long ago gave up on teaching real content. "The students don't know Hebrew because the emphases are on other things," she adds. "Today's students can get a 100 on a Hebrew language test, but still not be able to write the simplest letter to the principal."

Ne'eman says openly that she left the Education Ministry because her aim was to make an impact, and she wasn't included in the whole Dovrat Commission educational reform process. Though she says this was a wonderful effort on the part of Education Minister Limor Livnat, she also eulogizes it, saying "its time has passed." ... full text http://tinyurl.com/am6ob
