Dear Colleagues,
Now that Moed Bet is behind us, (and I, thank goodness, am NOT a bagrut
marker - so I do not have THAT looming over my head...although many of you
do) I feel it is time to turn to what I love to do during the summer - and
that is LEARN more cool stuff to use with my classes for NEXT year. (I know
- I'm sick.... and it's gotten even worse since I became a GTA
teacher.....but I digress). I find myself in a constant battle with my
students - trying to get them to turn off their cellphones. So - as they
say - if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! More and more of my kids have
smartphones.... that is REALLY hard to compete with.

My challenge for this summer (well - one of them) is to learn different
ways to take ADVANTAGE of their cellphones. I thought that maybe we could
brainstorm and come up with some effective and cool learning activities
together.

I'll start the ball rolling (both of these ideas were gleaned from my
Google Teachers'Academy course):

   1. Last year, we had a quiz in the classroom. The class was divided into
two teams. If one team missed a question, it got passed on to the other
team. If the second team missed it, then each team had a Ninja with a
Smartphone, who looked up the answer. The first team whose Ninja found the
   answer, got the point.
   2. Another use is to make barcodes with information encoded, and have
the kids use their smartphones to decode the information. Again - not every
kid needs a smartphone for this.

Here are two articles I have found - it's a pretty good place to start!

I hope this turns into a good discussion! We all have LOTS to gain from it!
So... who's joining me? Let's get a whole bunch of ideas out there to liven
up our classrooms. I am sure we will gather a TON! If we actually get
activities and lesson plans together, I am sure David will agree to make a
section for these to be posted so they can be found more easily than
through the email (especially with the digests).

ATB
Adele
