For the record (and please note that I am NOT on the steering committee and
was not involved in the choice of the pieces), the pieces were chosen based
on recommendations and requests of teachers IN THE FIELD. Every teacher
was asked for his or her input.
Also, I don't entirely agree with your interpretation of the poem -- I
don't think Collins is saying that we should only understand poetry on our
own. That's for a separate thread, though.
