Hi Phyllis,

When you are choosing pieces for a national curriculum, there is no way you
are going to please everyone. One of the reasons for having two Options
was to expand the range of choices so that teachers could "find themselves"
within one of them. There was an attempt to balance new pieces with the
"old favorites", and this was done after asking teachers all over the
country for their input.

With that said, I prefer the Log, since then I'm not bound by anyone's
choices but my own [pending approval, of course ;-)) ]

Regards,
Maxine Tsvaigrach

For the record (and please note that I am NOT on the steering committee and
was not involved in the choice of the pieces), the pieces were chosen based
on recommendations and requests of teachers IN THE FIELD. Every teacher was
asked for his or her input.
Also, I don't entirely agree with your interpretation of the poem -- I don't
think Collins is saying that we should only understand poetry on our own.
That's for a separate thread, though.
