**** ETNI on the web http://www.etni.org.il http://www.etni.org **** I do not have a problem with non-native speakers teaching English. As I indicated many do become excellent teachers of English. Where I have a problem is with the approach to teaching presented by Elana at the end of our ETAI conference who suggested we teach our own variety of English using Hebrew words and phrases. It is important to note the comments of Penny Ur. If someone is proficient enough in the language that is fine. However, the question related to native speakers and not Hebrew speakers. Being a Hebrew speaker is an advantage with Hebrew speakers. The problem is not a shortage of teachers but shortage of qualified teachers who choose to remain in the profession because of the attitudes of the ministry towards us and the salaries we receive.
