[etni] Re: native speakers

This reminds me...  I once wrote the following words on the blackboard and
asked my students which two words on this list sound alike:

sax
sakes
sex
seeks
six
sikes
soaks
socks
sucks

Of course, no two words on this list sound alike.  The idea that there could
be nine different vowel sounds (and there are more -- just none that I can
think of that start with the "s" sound and end with the "x" sound) drove
them nuts!  Getting them to hear the difference between various vowels
sounds (and also pronounce them correctly) is one of my favorite exercises,
but I think my students find it a bit frustrating!
