[gps-talkusers] Amazing Results and a Rather Startling Discovery About Intersection Announcements

Hello Charles:

I am sending this both to the list and to your direct email address in hopes
that others may find it useful.

Well, I've been using the Seeing Eye App for a few weeks now and I want to
state that the app is amazing in its accuracy with regard to non-route
intersection announcements with one exception that I will describe
momentarily.

Thanks to Sendero Group, there is finally an iOS app that I can
wholeheartedly recommend to blind and low vision travelers. The last GPS
App I trusted on a mobile device as a stand alone solution was Code
Factory's Mobile Geo.

I truly appreciate your efforts and applaud your success. Bravo!

Now, to the one glitch I'm hoping can be addressed/fixed:

Let me set the proverbial stage for you:

1.
I launch the App on my iPHone 4 S running the latest version of iOS.

2.
Under the General Settings, I have my map set to NavTech.

3.
Under the Look Around Settings, I have Intersection Announcements set to
Always.

4.
I close the Settings and make sure that the Location Tab is selected.

5.
The Look Around Wand is off.

6.
I begin either walking or riding. With the exception of the largest street
in Orange County, California, intersections are announced perfectly, as I
approach them. It's as if I have my beloved Mobile Geo back. Code Factory
would be proud. (Smile).

The largest and most heavily traveled street in Huntington Beach, California
and arguably in all of Orange County is Beach Blvd (CA-39) or California
Highway 39.

For whatever reason, when I travel down this street, intersections are not
announced. When I turn off of Beach boulevard, low-and-behold, the app
begins working again; that is to say, intersections are announced.

I am truly baffled by this glitch. I fear that there could be other major
thoroughfares in Los Angeles/Orange County that exhibit this problem but, so
far, I have only seen this lack of functionality on Beach Boulevard.

And of course, as luck would have it, the street I live on, travel the most
and need information about the most is, you guessed it, Beach Boulevard
(Big, big smile).

So, is there anything that can be done to fix this?

Profoundly Perplexed and Most Sincerely,

Mark

Hello Mark.
I assume when you go out, that you are walking correct?
This is very strange, since you got the intersections initially it should be
cached a mile around you so I don't know why the system wouldn't keep
automatically announcing the intersections, unless the road you are on isn't
spelled the same as one of the streets in the intersection.
Not quite sure on that yet, we will see what the logs say.
Thanks.

Hello Charles and thank you for the reply.

I did as you said and pointed at an intersection while I was near my home
Wifi. The app appeared to work but as I left the range of my WiFi, auto
intersection announcements stopped, if they even worked in the first place.

If you think about it, there is no way I can move from one intersection to
another and still be in range of my home Wifi.

As you instructed, I submitted the route logs from the phone.

Mark

Hello Mark,
It should work unless you have intersections turned off (which I doubt you
have done). To check it would be under Lookaround and have Intersections
turned on (Announce Under 15 MPH). The current software doesn't announce
intersections above 15 MPH but this will change as Mike has stated in a
future update.

Mike experienced a similar problem with his iPhone 4S that intersections
were not coming up, but when came back from the UK the intersections started
working again for him. You may want to try to see if a wifi connection
helps get your intersections working on your location screen. Just point
the phone towards an intersection and after a few seconds the data should be
downloaded from the server.

If you still have issues please try sending us your logs with the title no
intersections, and tell us also what iPhone and what iOS you are running.

Does anyone else have issues where they are not getting intersections at
all?
Thanks.

Subject: [gps-talkusers] Another Question About Intersections

Hello Mike, et al,

Thank you for the welcome.

I set a route on the app yesterday and it performed marvelously.

However, generally speaking, I don't use routes, opting instead to just
launch the app and walk/ride.

Am I correct in assuming that the app is supposed to announce upcoming
intersections as I move along a street?

Not to cast stones but this was the case in Mobile Geo and is the case on
the Trekker Breeze.

Try as I might, I cannot get the app to automatically announce upcoming
intersections on my iPhone 4 S.

If there are specific steps I need to take in order to get this to happen,
please let me know.

Presently, what I do is:

1.
Launch the app.

2.
Make sure the location tab is selected.

Also, I have tried walking with the look-around wand both turned on and
turned off with no difference in performance.

Is there some area on the screen I'm supposed to activate in order to have
auto intersection announcements?

Thanks for any help on this.

Mark

Welcome Mark.
Ok guys, we don't normally preannounce things but I can confidently say that
the intersection announcement feature has been fixed above 15 MPH. You
additionally can set the limit at 40 MPH or always. Same for POIs. I tested
it yesterday in a beta and it is working as expected.

And no, I can't say yet when this version will be released. We hope quite
soon.

Mike

Subject: [gps-talkusers] A New User and a Question

Hello,

This is Mark Taylor.

I just purchased Seeing Eye GPS for my iPhone 4 S.

I launched the program, configured the settings and took the app out for a
test spin/walk.

I did not set a route destination, I just started walking down the street.
To my dismay, the app did not automatically announce upcoming intersections.

I live in southern California in a major city so I know the area is well
mapped.

Later, I got into a car and attempted to set the announce intersection
option to something greater than 15 miles per hour but was unable to change
it.

Am I missing something?

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Mark
