Hi,
The user's guide for Seeing Eye GPS, found at
http://www.senderogroup.com/products/SeeingEyeGPS/SEGPSUserGuide.htm
states that the maps screen is indeed visual and is not spoken by VoiceOver.
That's what I thought I'd read, anyway.

I found the map option and went into it could anyone please tell me what
purpose this option serves? it seems to be visual I swiped around the
screen and did not find much information?
