Hi CArol  
 it has now been explained and I will try it out on my tuesday trip to London! 
I need to press R then A then E or R then A then D for distance as per route 
rather than as the crow flies!

That's interesting because I found there was quite a discrepancy in a route I 
did from Reading to Birmingham about a year ago, comparing it with other GPS 
systems.  I don't do long routes often and decided either could have been 
correct so didn't discuss it at the time.
 
Hmmm!  I know different routes from A to B can vary considerably but I'm pretty 
sure the same route was taken on this occasion.
