There is an "underscan" mode that will "solve" the problem by bringing the
display in a bit on the left and right, maybe about 1cm (quite a lot more
than necessary). But it keeps the same resolution and does some
interpolation across the width, which looks terrible.
I'd agree it is an issue with the monitor, it really should have a slightly
wider backlight. 3mm more at either side and the bottom would do it. It
isn't something that is a manufacturing issue, if I were to send it back
for replacement, that wouldn't resolve it.
If I could just put a border or something on the left, or otherwise bring
in the display a bit on the left, that would work around that problem.
I haven't had the problem with fonts being too small in the title or
anything. I'm fine with the fonts as they are. I have 2 FHD displays in
portrait mode flanking this 4K, and the titles are fine on them.

I had a similar issue with an FullHD TV. However as soon as I
configured it in "Computer" mode (don't remember exactly the
terminology), the pixels were correctly aligned.
Thus I would say there is an issue with your monitor more than anything
else.
But regarding large screens, I think you'll soon face another issue,
especially if you are also using the laptop's monitor, namely the size
of the window title bars: on the large screen they are too small o be
read.
Therefore a related feature would be having the possibility to specify
the size of titles and fonts per monitor. (Although I guess this
would be quite complex to implement.)
