I feel, we are thinking from our perspective, instead of the end user
perspective.
We are so used to Linux, FOSS, etc, that we use many technical words
casually..
But how about the mindset of those students/ teachers..
Telling that they should have the attitude is pretty easy.. But that
attitude when not provided with suitable source of knowledge, will
extinguish..
I will just give an example.. My sister is in her final year CS .. she
called me for some project for display in her college education.
I told her, to go for OSS.. you wont believe.. she asked me the most basic
elementary questions of FOSS..
some are below.
What is OSS?
What is FOSS?
I told her to first google these words, and then call me.. the next day,
she called me, and just told what is there in the site..
I was wondering, what is the difference b/w knowing and understanding..
they know what is FOSS.. but did she understood it?
I spend one hour over the phone explaining what is open source etc..
So, when even a final year college student is like that, how about a typical
government school student?
I strongly believe, we need to get down to the most basic level to spread
OSS & FOSS..

IMO, that is a wrong assumption. It is not the lack
of knowledge, it
is the lack of *attitude* or *drive* or *initiative*
to help
themselves.
If you focus only on the faculty, you will end up
like Kolhapur
(Maharashtra), were faculty after getting trained
moved to the
Industry for better paying jobs.
Students _must_ have the *attitude* to learn for
themselves, and for
their future. If they keep expecting others to train
them, they will
never learn, and there will only be so-called
"training institutes"
that just suck more money and give back s***.
Faculty _must_ have the *attitude* to learn, atleast
for themselves.
College management _must_ have the *attitude* to
keep themselves
"informed" about *education*, and how they can help
the college
infrastructure.
If each one blames the other as an excuse, neither
will they improve,
nor anything will change.
Sadly most students from these schools dont even
have access to basic computer education and the only
oppurtunity for the same is going to waste because
there is no trained staff.
A good idea could be to get staffs from all schools
in a district and conduct a workshop.
And if we can find volunteers for the same(you can
count me as one), we can cover a fair number of
schools.
