I have not used IRC all that much. Can you please explain how
the interaction on IRC will be different from the mailing list?
Conversation's are more informal. You need to have an _agenda_ to
interact with the LUG as is required on the mailing list. Also
non-chennai ILUGUC folk can drop in to say a 'hi' to LUG friends.
Yes, as Toufeeq said, its more like an online conference room (much
similar to a 'chat room' of yahoo messenger, but a bit moderated. People
can login with the nick of their choice and participate in the
discussions, while the ops have certain degree of control over keeping
the temperature of the channel (conf room) under control. Also, people
from other LUGs who usually hang out in various other channels can drop
in. We can set a 'topic' for the discussion for the particular day which
will be displayed to everyone joining in the channel.
But do we need a _separate_ channel ? Isn't #linux-india good enough ?
Topa, you do know about #linux-india. As we are normally hanging out
there, it might not be a problem for us. But, when we are planning to
have some weekend meeting kinda wrt ilugc, we felt that using
#linux-india might not be the best choice, as other people usually
hanging there might feel uncomfortable with discussing too much of ilugc
related stuff/ flooding of people from ilugc ( too much expectation, i
agree! ;) ). Rather than debating whether there might occur any issues
in having ilugc meets in #linux-india, we felt that we can have a
channel for our own, so that we do not embarrass anyone else :)
