distros use modules as they need to cater a wide range of hardware -
it just isn't possible to compile in everything...for a custom
installation though, I guess compiling in things is better - faster,
saves some space required for the module as well (that's a microscopic
amt though...) - come on, there is no point in having a reiserfs
module with reiserfs on your hard disk. it is anyway needed right from
bootup to shutdown - I generally have modules for those which I may
not use that frequently, or for those which I may not need now, but
may require it some time in the future - in fact, even for the second
case, it isn't that difficult to do a recompile anyway...
it moves on...

I guess it would depend on the system and what you
intend to use the system for.
If you are working on cutting-edge and
development/testing, then you will require modular
support.
If you are an end-user who simply want to use the
system, with quick boots, performance, then you might
as well have all the modules compiled in, after
installing/configuring your hardware.
