1. I either want to partition the 80GB HDD, which is now existing as a
single partition under windows, so that I can install Linux. Which is
the best way to do this. Partition Magic is proprietary. Will fdisk be a
good option?

Partiton* (imo)..It is jus a 33 odd megs of download,
