For GUI, you need to download Mplayer skins and put them into the skins
directory in the .Mplayer folder in your home directory. For running command
line version, open a terminal, cd to the directory which contains the media,
and simply type mplayer <filename> , to start playing it. Other way is to
right click on a file in nautilus, say open with and type mplayer.
mplayer rocks as a media player.
I can never praise it enough. You can do highly sophisticated stuff like
controlling with FIFO, LIRC remote, take screenshots every few frames
and so on. You can have transparent menus and what not.
It has got an extremely feature rich audio and video filter subsystem.
It also supports several audio and video output drivers.
$ mplayer -vo help
$ mplayer -ao help
$ mplayer -af help
$ mplayer -vf help
I admit it can take a little while to get comfortable with all its
options but its man page is really comprehensive.
By the way it can also play analog and digital television in addition to
all sorts of audio and video files. :)
Streaming, DVD, VCD... you know what I mean.
It is real dynamite packed in a neat command line.
