This can be best *avoided* if schools and colleges are motivated not
to keep any sort of attendance statistics and allow bringing Books to
the examination hall (think how the teachers will be forced to set the
exam questions if it was Open-Book style).
I've attended several courses with open-book exams, and most of them were
moderately difficult - but there was one course with a take-home, open-book
exam, with a deadline of 3 weeks for submission of solutions; but even a
single copied incorrect solution would guarantee an F (failing) grade. OTOH,
an incorrect but original solution might still get partial credit.
I was still at 0 out of 30 problems on the night before the deadline.
This was the pre-web era, but I managed to solve 1 problem that night,
and ended up passing the course. My understanding was that about 50% of
the class was stuck at 0/30, and the remaining were mostly on 1/30 or
2/30.
Do you see the drawback with copying in that take-home exam? The odds were
overwhelming that they'd have copied an incorrect solution. About 40% of the
class ended up with an F as a result of this, ensuring that many who got
0/30 on the test but did not resort to copying cruised comfortably ahead.
