Hi Luggies,
I was very happy on the first day I went to my new office ( Ten Miles
Corp, chennai ). My boss gave me the freedom to install whatever distro i
want, as I am entitled to work as web developer in PHP_MySql. He also
asked to setup a pilot server setup, which will eventually give them
confidence to move using a Linux based server from the existing windows
2003 server.
For the least 3 days, I have tried with FC4, Ubuntu, Suse and finally
FreeBSD. ( i know, i missed Debian) There is one main problem which i am
facing. I have been given a custom assembled DELL system, whose hardware
connot be changed (except mouse, keyboard and monitor). The monitor is
actualy a 15" LG product branded a DELL. But, whatever distro i install it
is not able to bring up any other resolition than 600x480 ( the least
resolution which causes bottom 30% of the screen to be not visible at
all). I complained him that it is a hardware problem and changing the
monitor might be a good idea. So, he generously bought me a 17" Samsung
LCD monitor today for 13,000 Rs.
Still, we are not able to change resolution with FC4 and Ubuntu. With
FreeBSD 6, it starts vwm ( don't rem the name exactly) as the default
desktop instead of Gnome or KDE. How to change this or start GNOME/KDE ?
When i start x from the console, it is vwm ( i had to find it from the
title of the menu which appeared when clicked at the top of the indivudual
window).
Those guys got fed up and asked me to continue using windows :(( Does
anyone have idea about what's going wrong ? When i ran ubuntu live cd, the
a part of the desktop went and hid in the left hand side of the monitor,
leaving a blank black portion of the right. We tried our best to move the
desktop, but even when it is moved max, its still the same. Also, the
resolution couldn't be changed to even 800x600 :(
I am planning to try out Suse tomorrow, which was fine when i tried
installed in my home. But, as usual, it couldn't startx in my PC,
hopefully due to my nvidia fx5200 card. :( I never expected things to getb
this much troublesome.
