I feel one project should essentially be on setting up and
maintaining a website using the L.A.M.P. solution stack. Basic as it

Areas normally missed out apart from those listed:
1. Basic TCP/IP networking, routing, filtering etc. One exercise should
be set up 3/4 small LANs, route and filter traffic between them.
2. Definitely LAMP - in a secure fashion using iptables, apache config
and directives.
3. I believe many colleges do not have machines where OS installations
can be tried out. A separate set of machines dedicated for this practice
helps. Can be yesteryear h/w condemned from M$ labs.
4. Eclipse IDE to move away from M$ Visual Series.
5. Create familiarity with the FOSS ecosystem, do reading seminars with
papers from RMS, ESR, Bruce Perens etc, discuss licencing options,
repurcussions, Forum usage/etiquette, personal progression and
navigation in a collaborative FOSS community etc.
6. Use of good scripting tools/languages for testing Tcl/Tk, Expect etc.
7. Doc tools like Latex, Docbook etc.
8. A course on discussions and practice of FOSS alternatives for popular
commercial options, migration, compatibility etc.
