i am not suggesting deleting those lines - if your monitor has
problems, then the probe might be dangerous - also, all monitors can't
be probed correctly - fedora has never done it for my microtek - I
have always installed it from the text mode interface - but the
monitor manuals that come along are authoritative, right ???

Yes I too had edited /etc/X11/XF86config.In the monitor section I deleted
hsync and vsync line.When I executed startx it probed the monitor (xfs
it-self updated into CF86config) and I could get into GUI , but I am scared
to suggest this, it had worked for me many times.
