To change the font in the Terminal :
In the Terminal application, from the Font menu, select Show Fonts (OS
X 10.2.x and later) or Font Panel... .
In the Font window, select the family, typeface, and size you want to
use. For some families, you may also change the character width and
height.
To make your changes the default setting, click the Save This Setting
As My Default Font button.
Linux on the Desktop & OS X on the move :)
Quick language recommendation : since you're allergic to $var format
in Perl/PHP I heartily recommned Ruby. Complete OO... and get the
second edition of the pickaxe book from pragmatic programmers :
