There are irc bots available which will record every word exchanged on
IRC.This transcript is then made available live on the web.Lots of
community based portals have such "live irclogs".
In chat a lot of mundane and trivial msgs will be exchanged. A chat
archive containing all these will be more difficult to sift and seive.
On the contrary, mails are distilled pieces of information (at least
they are compared to chat :-) )
