I'm using Samsung M3510 which has an option to change the mode of
connection
at Settings->PC Connections. I hope all the phones will have some
option or
the other to change the mode. If the mode of connection is set to
"Mass
storage" the filesystem of the mobile and memory cards, if any will be
mounted automatically. You can set the mode to "Ask on connection" if
you
want to connect the mobile phone to system for various purposes. 

yes - set it to mass storage, but it is showing 'My Photos' as empty -
but it is not empty. Any clues?
