Hi All,
Jim Kringle, Jim Crites, and I birded Clapp late this afternoon and early
evening. As we were leaving we also ran into Holly and John. Still no Common
Yellowthroats for me, but we did get to see the Yellow-breasted Chat, Northern
Waterthrush, immature Cooper’s Hawk, and a Red-shouldered Hawk with either
another one or chasing another hawk. Particularly delightful were the low
flying Chimney Swifts and Barn Swallows in the early evening.

Comments: Sunny with a few clouds. Calm. High to mid 80’s. Dragonflies. No
butterflies. Fixed distance from 2.53. We drove from the Cooper’s Hawk to the
Arboretum.

30 Chimney Swift -- Easily an underestimate. Flying low over the trees and
fairly low over the grass in the evening.
1 Black-chinned Hummingbird -- Female
1 hummingbird sp. -- Heard it’s chatter
1 Osprey
1 Cooper's Hawk -- Immature. Unsuccessful in its squirrel chase. Saw 2x. Also
saw by the big stone seats.
1 Red-shouldered Hawk -- Maybe 2. 2 hawks, one behind the other flew overhead
and one gave a Red-shouldered call. We had just seen the immature Cooper’s. Do
not know if RS was chasing CH or it was 2 RS. The 2 hawks in the air looked
identical, but I only got a quick look. Heard calling from a tree later, but
could not find.
1 Olive-sided Flycatcher -- Perched at the top of the tree where the
Mississippi Kites usually sit. Saw from the south culvert with the scope.
1 Blue Jay
30 Barn Swallow -- Easily an underestimate. Flying low over the grass and trees
in the evening.

1 Yellow-breasted Chat -- Gray head and upperside, white around the eye and on
the face, bright yellow throat and chest, white stomach and undertail coverts.
Large songbird. Close in size to the nearby cardinal. Saw 2x. In the conifer
shrubs in front of the big white stone seats both times.
40 Great-tailed Grackle
1 Northern Waterthrush -- Along path between the playas on the southern edge
where the water meets the mud. Took a bath :)
1 Wilson's Warbler -- Female/immature
2 Northern Cardinal -- Male and female
1 Painted Bunting -- Female
