Hi all,
Beautiful flycatcher, Holly! Flycatchers are difficult. Difficult in person and
even more difficult in pics. If you get a chance to take pics of one, try to
get the front, side, and back. The back is really important bc it’s what we
need for primary projection, lined tertials and secondaries (flight feathers),
tail length, head and back color, etc. Unfortunately, one pic of any angle will
rarely do either. You need multiples and to try to get it in a relaxed state.
It is possible that this is a yellow-bellied, but cordilleran are much more
likely here and the two are almost almost identical except for the wingbar and
lined flight feather colors. That’s assuming the little bit of yellow on the
throat is accurate and not a reflection/artifact in the pic. Otherwise, all of
small flycatchers can have yellow bellies on immatures or adults in fresh
plumage. No matter what it’s called, it’s a pretty bird and I’m glad you got to
enjoy it in your backyard! :)
Hope this helps.

I'm not certain, but I am thinking 1st fall Yellow-bellied Flycatcher.
Would help if wings and back were shown. I also think the sunlight on the
throat and upper chest looks like it's hiding some of the yellow. Bill
colors wingtip projection seem right. Looked at both guides, the description
in Nat Geo, and photo seem on point. Also considered the Cordilleran and
Pacific-slope, 1st fall. Anyway, just my thoughts. Others probably have
more field experience. Interested to see others thoughts.
