Funny that both the article and Bert focused on the lack of an ATSC tuner. Why in the world would Apple, or any other company for that matter, add a tuner to
a STB when that tuner is already included with the TV?

Do you expect your TV to incorporate a PVR, Craig? If yes, you would have a point. If no, then clearly a separate box that allows for "anytime viewing" would be expected to allow for time shifting of OTA programs. Even if such time shifting *might* not be essential for Internet-based TV.

If this Apple box does not provide time shift recording, then that's one more reason to pass it up.

Nice try Bert. but it doesn't wash.

The notion of keeping content in the cloud where it can be accessed on demand runs counter to the concept of pulling content from broadcast and MVPD channels. If you want a PVR, buy one. Apple TV is not trying to appeal to you, and I suspect Apple is not too excited about having to pay Tivo royalties for a PVR.

this discussion is boring. We are at the mercy of the congloms and the
politicians, and there's nothing Mr. Jobs can do to change those dynamics for
 now.

The victim mentality again?

And we will remain victims until we "JUST SAY NO to the media congloms and the professional sports franchises that are feasting on our monthly tithes.

You are happy to complain about being at the mercy of the congloms, oddly enough, and ignoring being at the mercy of Apple or of the MVPDs. On the other hand, I watch conglom content regularly and don't feel the least bit at their mercy. Unless those who would help abolish FOTA TV get their way, that is.

When I watch much of the content from the congloms I just get disgusted. You may not be at their mercy, but you and the rest of the bottom feeders are helping them to sustain their oligopoly just as certainly as any MVPD subscriber. Those who still use antennas represent a big chunk of the audience for the content delivered by "the networks."

Fortunately, we are getting close to the point where discriminating viewers may be able to cancel their MVPD subscriptions and pay only for the stuff we want to watch.

As for being at the mercy of Apple, I have no complaints.

I just got my new iPhone 4; it is a significant step forward from the 2G phone it replaced. The upgrade was painless and the new phone was synchronized with all my files in less than an hour. And the app to get my free case made selecting and ordering it painless. And then there's the AntennaGate "problem." The new phone works virtually everywhere in the brewery, with or without a case - the old phone was mostly useless in the brewery.

Perhaps even more rewarding is the new roles for my old phone and iPod Mini. The mini has been providing music at the brewery for the past two years; it now has a permanent home in my truck. The old 2G iPhone has become the new brewery media server. It still functions as an iPod Touch using WiFi, so in addition to being able to play my iTunes music collection, I am now streaming music from Pandora; and it still provides a backup terminal for email and web surfing.

Yeah, I really hate being at the mercy of Apple...

;-)

Craig

Oh, and did I mention that Apple really stuck it to me for the upgrade to OSX - v10.6 (Snow Leopard)? $49 for a family pack upgrade for our two MacBooks.
