Apples and oranges. Broadcasters have been pumping money out of the spectrum for more than 50 years, and for the last 20 they have been getting revenues from the multi-channel services as well. The money they have spent on the conversion to digital is little more than a protection payment to the politicians. Most stations have paid for this out of operating engineering budgets, or taxpayer money for most PBS stations. The amount broadcasters have spent is still measured in million$, while cable and DBS have been spending BILLION$ for their digital upgrades. If OTA digital broadcasting is so wonderful, and has cost broadcasters so much, WHY is )it that the ONLY broadcast group to spend a DIME on promotion has been Sinclair? When is the last time (or first for that matter) that you have seen an on-air promotional announcement about the digital transition? It is the broadcasters who should stop whining and start promoting the DTV transition. As usual, they want the politicians to give them even more perks as the price for making the transition.
