You are absolutely right about the broadcasters failure to make any = effort to promote their digital service. It is really hard to explain or to forgive. Gotta give them credit for providing so much content in Hi-Def even tho they do not get a penny more for doing it. They do promote = that slightly. I don't agree with you that they are making money on their multi-channel service. In 3 markets, Albuquerque, Los Vegas and Salt Lake City, they definitely are, with their selling off bandwidth to U S Digital. But do = you know of such revenue elsewhere; I'd like to know. Here in Los Angeles, = none of the major stations are doing that. Here the major stations do most = of their prime-time in Hi-def, which doesn't leave much bandwidth for other services. The ad agencies put the broadcasters on notice they would not increase their ad budgets because of digital. Apples and oranges. Broadcasters have been pumping money out of the spectrum for more=20 than 50 years, and for the last 20 they have been getting revenues=20 from the multi-channel services as well. The money they have spent on the conversion to digital is little more=20 than a protection payment to the politicians. Most stations have paid=20 for this out of operating engineering budgets, or taxpayer money for=20 most PBS stations. The amount broadcasters have spent is still=20 measured in million$, while cable and DBS have been spending BILLION$=20 for their digital upgrades. If OTA digital broadcasting is so wonderful, and has cost=20 broadcasters so much, WHY is )it that the ONLY broadcast group to=20 spend a DIME on promotion has been Sinclair? When is the last time (or first for that matter) that you have seen=20 an on-air promotional announcement about the digital transition? It is the broadcasters who should stop whining and start promoting=20 the DTV transition. As usual, they want the politicians to give them even more perks as=20 the price for making the transition.
