There is one good reason: it's up to the content owners, including
your buddies Les, Robert, and Skipper.
And they are all thinking about gaining more of an Internet presence. It's not
like any of the aforementioned is staunchly anti-innovation. They've all
understood that dropping to 50% of their glory days viewership, which you
continue to ask about, is totally out of the question.
If all MVPD services are "nationalized," which may happen eventually,
then the focus will turn to taxing and regulating the Internet - the
first shoe has already dropped with the Title II decision.
The sky is falling. We have to move beyond the 40 year old MVPD model, Craig,
and the new model already exists. It's MVPDs becoming OTT sites. MVPDs behaving
like Sling TV, like Amazon, like Netflix, like Hulu, like HBO Now, Sony Vue.
Competing against one another, against CBS All Access, not to mention cbs.com
etc., and all the others who will be entering the field. Difference being, the
cable systems also have the (neutral) broadband access business in their
portfolio, where the others I mentioned don't.
This has nothing to do with taxation of the Internet. The neutral Internet
access aspect is separate from the OTT service. There's no reason for any high
drama here, especially considering where we are migrating FROM, for pete's sake.
