I didn't attend this year; but one of my Producer friends did. Friday, I sat down with him and asked him about all this "3D" buzz. He looked at me with a puzzled look. He thought the biggest thing was acquisition using Digital SLR cameras such as the Canon 5D. (An episode of Fox's "House" was recently shot using one 5D camera.) He saw a lot of camera accessory booths prominently featuring the Canon 5D camera and their accessories. It's an interesting observation, as two news photographer friends who attended mentioned the 3D as well. I guess folks in different fields took away different perspectives.
I too heard that the D-SLR buzz was the REAL big thing at NAB.I'm not surprised. A number of years ago, when Panasonic announced that they were moving from tape to solid state memory (P2), I suggested that the digital camera makers would eventually take control of the video acquisition market. It was clear even then that the huge consumer market for digital photography would evolve into photos and video. Dedicated professional video gear is simply too small of a niche to survive for long...
I am now hearing from friends who had made large investments in traditional HD acquisition gear that they are losing business to new shops using the Canon 5D.
