In a sense they already do reach the akl carte market. Most of the original HBO series are released on DVD. But they have steadfastly opposed making their show available the Netflix and Hulu. It's all about protecting their cable partners. There was a consumer campaign last year to get HBO to offer a paid streaming only service. According to the story, HBO politely said no.
