In truth, there's nothing new about 24-bit, 96 KHz (or 192 KHz) digital audio. I think all DVD players can read such audio (unless it has been deleted in recent times unbeknownst to me), and I know that audiophile publications have been begging for years and years that such formats be used. A DVD can be used for only high res audio, with no video. The problem was never really whether this format could be used. The problem was that the recording companies wanted to encrypt the content to prevent copying, if such good quality was to be provided. That's what killed the idea for the physical media. Similar to what happened to DAT.
