Thing is, the ultimate "excuse" for the govt-mandated analog switchoff is not what they think. It is not about making your home into a cinema. It is about freeing up spectrum while not just preserving OTA TV, but at the same time, making it much better. And those who like small, square, grainy screens can still use those.
