I only hesitate because the books use British English for car parts so
consistently (e.g. tyres), so is milometer (or mileometer) the typically
British way to say it?

Huh. I would spell it without the superfluous 'e', but there you go. It
is the UK name for an odometer, according to the definition.
This is the only (reported) outstanding issue left across all the books!
