The following was sent from the Project Aon contact form From: Jacob Humphrey eyemixer@xxxxxxxxx Date: 01:11:43 on Saturday, April 8, 2006 Subject: PHP conversion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am currently teaching myself PHP and MySQL, and it seems the current system you have with frames and whatnot could be redone with PHP. Some of the benefits would be 1) Active inventory system, no typing. Icons could be used, as well as auto-removal of used items (food, healing, etc...) 2) Better fit to book's intended rule usage. There could be various rule templates. For example, areas where you can't hunt for food using a skill, certain options would not be available. Automatic healing from skill at the right places. Places where there are discrepancies as to how a situation should be handled could have various rulesets for the player to choose when starting a book. 3) Removes temptaion to fudge things a bit. It can be hard to not pretend you have that one extra skill you would have taken at the start if you only knew..... Having enforced rules can be nice, as any honest player shouldn't care, and those who can't help themselves still get the true experience. 4) Lots of other stuff. Things like a map that can be used whenever the book makes a ref to it, or at will if it's the one inc in the book itself. All combat stats from items and othereffects would auto adjust, no more changing attack from 17 to 15 after combat using mindblast, or having to change combat values when using special weapons. I don't mean to slam the current system at all, I've played through all the book but the last few more than once, and had a great time. I just think with a tighter implementation, all the tasks that take away from the text and stenciled graphics could be made quite tangential to the adventure in terms of 'stuff you have to do' whether it's typing, changing combat stats, or using a healing potion. I'm sending this message, because I would like to begin working on what I described (Seems like a good PHP project, my first one was too ambitious) and I was hoping I could use your texts as the base of my project. It WOULD NOT be distributed at all, or made open for public viewing/playing. I just want to help, and I can't do much in regards to the things you have posted in your wish list. It seems to me, converting the books to a MySQL DataBase would be quite easy, as there are not that many different actions that can occur on any given page (Read text, See picture, Use Skill, Get Item, Lose Item, Alter Character Stats, Combat, Choose Next Page) I hope I have convinced you I really just want to make the online exp better, and you will let me use your source PRIVATELY until a time when I can hook you on the idea with a working demo, then I hope it can be made public (the code for it would all be GNU'd or GPL'd, and you could host it, assuming I made something good enough) Whew, quite longwinded, and there is a good chance several spellings were sacrificed in the process. I hope it's OK, but I understand if it's not, just please let me know one way or the other.
