I think it’s a bit harsh to judge someone for not immediately distancing
themselves from an organization or a person that they love dearly when
accusations are made. That is such a terrible position to be in and keeping
one's loyalty to a dear friend or institution shouldn't tarnish their legacy. I
find myself in a similar situation occasionally when my beloved Marine Corps
and/or fellow Marines are accused of terrible behavior. I can commiserate with
Franco from that standpoint and don't fault him for wanting to limit the damage
of the terrible scandal to the people involved and not the entire school.
RIP Franco. Being a Steelers fan in the 1970s living in DFW was glorious, in
part, thanks to him.

I think that’ll be down to whatever the family agrees, it could still be a
celebration of his life if that’s the tone they wish to set.
When his statue is the first thing you see when you land at the airport, you
know what he means to the city. For me, I think my thoughts about him were
discoloured by his blind loyalty to Paterno, Sandusky and Penn State amidst
that scandal, but this is such a loss, the timing is just chilling and
shocking, he will be missed.

This drastically changes Saturday from a celebration to a very somber
occasion. Franco has always been the Steeler with the greatest connection to
me growing up in southern New Jersey. His name always popped up and he owned
several businesses near me. Just last year my son had a game at his high
school, and I saw a really neat plaque in the hall.
Over the years I have met him several times but my favorite has to be the
last game played at Threw Rivers stadium. It was a crappy day yet there was
Franco walking through the parking lot socializing with fans.
Just yesterday I read Najee praising him for supporting one of Najee’s causes
at a local homeless fundraiser.
I could go on and on.
Simply put, he will be missed.
