When I was a kid, he was my 2nd favorite, after Mean Joe.
Sometimes, when we’d go to my mom’s aunt’s house, there’d be a guy there who looked just like Franco. I’d just plop down next to him, say “Hey Friend”, he’d say “Hi” back, and then I’d start messing with his watch…Indo-Fijians had the coolest watches to me, and they were always Seikos.
I never found out who he was.
He could have been Mayor of PGH until end of time, if he wanted, but he was smarter than that.
In 2003, when we visited The Stick, after tailgating with Gary and Kathy Fails, Pete McNab, Ricardo Madrazo, and Matt Heaps, we’re on the escalator heading in, and who’s in the middle of us but 32.
He was the kindest, most gracious HOFer I’ve ever met. He genuinely loved meeting The Nation, especially on the road.
Dammit, y’all got me crying again.
