Agreed - I’ve always felt that if you’re not going to issue a number, retire
it, but on the other hand, keep it for the truly transcendent players in team
history.
No need to go bananas, 12 and 58 will do for me. The most recent era, 7 and 43
only.
59, 52, 36 and 32 are up for debate in my eyes. I’d allow 59 and 52, but 32 and
36 are on the outside looking in.

Because of the 50th anniversary of the immaculate reception - I can
understand the reason for the retirement - but . . .
Considering: 1) the way he left the team; 2) his Paterno truther stance; 3)
actively politicking for a casino on the South Side that could’ve lead to the
Penguins moving to KC or Hamilton - 12 should’ve been the third number
retired.

There are some numbers, like smells, that conjure up fond memories. Any
time I see a 43 ANYWHERE, I see in my mind Troy picking the ball off the
surface with his fingertips or running a pick back through heavy traffic.
Similarly, any time I see a 58 ANYWHERE, I see Cliff Harris on the ground.

They weren't going to give #32 to anyone ever again anyway, so I say he
deserves it. Same for Bradshaw, but I think he needs to endear himself to
the team a bit more before that'll happen.

For years Stautner was the only retired number and I thought it would
always be that way. Too many HOFers to retire their numbers. Joe Greene
made some sense as the start of a new era in franchise history.
I guess they will argue that the Immaculate reception was a turning point
in team history, but what next? Ben, Troy... another player from the next
era? Why not Swann, Stalworth, James or Santonio for crucial plays in team
history. I know it is the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception ,
but I don't like the idea of retiring the numbers. Just my opinion.
