Rudolph is in the last year of his Rookie deal and it takes him a while to
get acclimated to a situation. I think this situation is taylor-made for
the Steelers and for Rudolph. He makes good money while learning and is
ready to go at any time (and there is a school of thought that says it's
open competition in camp for the first time in ages), he makes great money
in the last Rookie year, and he's going to get a backup deal that will
exceed the income of what many QBs made as Starters just years ago, still
stay in the same system and be handed the keys to an offense (that he may
be better at already than Ben) three years from now. Not a bad deal, I say.

Haskins is happy that an esteemed organization has taken a chance on him

One of these things is not like the others. Maybe (cue rampant
speculation) Mason sees the Steelers keeping Ben for at LEAST another year,
putting his shot off another 365. Then they take a flyer on Haskins. Mason
understandably thinks "great, I'm gonna have to sing for my supper AGAIN".
In view of this, maybe Mason is fed up and says "look, I'm out, just trade
me. I want to play."
Whether or not the team sees this, they look at the situation and think
"we GOT Ben; we're gambling on Haskins; and we can have Dobbs for a song.
And if we DO that, we got Rudolph, who we can get a pretty good return on
in a trade."
The team seems to be in the driver's seat with these four on the payroll.
What am I not taking into consideration?
