Hi Tony,
If you tab into a message, rather than entering it with the enter key, the
escape key won't get you out of it. Also, when tabbing, you will see the
links in the message and shift-tabbing (back) you will see them in 'reverse
order'. If you tabbed into the message from the list, and you press control
+ home to get to the top of the message, then shift-tab once, you will
probably be out of it then and in the message list.
Now from the list, if you press enter, pressing the escape key should exit
the body of the email. If you press enter from the list, alt+f4 will cose
the message but leave you in outlook Express.
When exploring dialogues in outlook Express, if you press shift-f1 at any
tab, you will get context-sensitive help. (It works this way in windows XP
Sp3. office XP.)

Are your messages in html format? i.e. When you read the title of the
message window do you hear 'plain text' or 'html'
If they are in html format, then I would expect shift + tab and tab to
cycle between links, in the same way they would while in your web
browser.
I'm still unclear as to why you use shift + tab to exit the message. Can
you not use the escape key?

Hi Flor,
I have checked the preview pane as directed by you and whilst it has
improved things a bit I still have the problem of when shift/tabbing out of
a message I am landed on a link or links of the email I'm in!
I see the options in the layout menu but don't know which one to check or
uncheck if that's what else I need to do.
