Hi Tony, Yes, you can specify at which level of punctuation you wish individual punctuation symbols to be spoken at. Remember that If you set the comma to be spoken at level most, then it will be spoken at level most and above, i.e. Level all as well. I would let the punctuation be controlled by jaws, unless your synthesiser has some oddities which it uses in punctuation. Most people use eloquence, and letting jaws look after punctuation in this case works fine. Hi Tim Well just a quick Munster shout on the matter, then! Firstly, I will need to braille out those very comprehensive instructions indeed before setting about customising. It may be obvious but could I clarify, that you can adjust individual punctuation to one's own requirements, such as none or all? Should that be so it would indeed be great and fully solve that problem for me! Can you have your settings controlled by whichever you want, such as Jaws or the synthesizer or both? You know I'm glad that the weekend is almost upon us, as I'm sure you all are at this stage. Many thanks indeed, again for that very detailed response. All the best Tony Sweeney. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Culhane" <tim.culhane@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, May 25, 2006 8:34 AM Subject: [vicsireland] Re: Jaws not to speak everypunctuation! Hi Tony, You need to change the punctuation settings to a level which you feel comfortable with. The levels are none, some, most and all. Where none corresponds to no punctuation being spoken at all, and all corresponds to every punctuation character being spoken. There are 2 ways of setting the punctuation level, depending on whether your punctuation is controlled by jaws or your synthesiser. To determine which is the case, do the following: 1. hit jaws key (normally the insert key) + number 6 on the number row to bring up the configuration manager. 2. Hit control + shift + d to open the default configuration file. 3. Hit alt + s to open the set options menu and then hit t to open the text processing dialogue. 4. hit tab twice and you should land on a combo box which will tell you whether the default action is to have punctuation controlled by jaws or the synthesiser. 5. If it is controlled by the synthesiser then hit escape to return to the default configuration file and Hit alt + s again followed by the letter s to open the synthesiser dialogue. 6. In here you can set the punctuation level. Once done, hit ok and then Press control + s to save your settings, followed by alt + f4 to close the configuration manager. 7. Note that you can change the punctuation level for specific applications such as Outlook or Internet explorer by hitting jaws key + number 6 from within these applications in order to open the application specific configuration file. Then change the punctuation in the synthesiser dialogue as above and save and close the configuration file. 8. If the punctuation is controlled by jaws then close the configuration manager and move to the jaws window. 9. bring up the options menu and then move to voices. Hit right arrow here to expand the voices sub menu. In here you can hit enter on global or individual voice adjustment. In these dialogues you can set the punctuation level for jaws. Note, using the individual voices dialogue allows you to set different levels of punctuation for the pc cursor voice, the jaws cursor voice etc. Finally, you can customise in which level of punctuation a particular symbol appears. To do this: 1. Open the default or application specific configuration file as described above. 2. hit alt + s followed by p to open the customise punctuation dialogue. 3. You will find yourself in a list of punctuation characters. For example, If you want a quote symbol only to be spoken when punctuation is set to all then move down the list until you reach quote. Tab once and you will be in a combo box where you can specify the punctuation level at which the selected symbol should be spoken. Select all in this case. Then tab to ok and hit enter. Remember to save the configuration file before closing it. Hope this helps, Any queries just shoutt. Hi All I wonder if you could let me know how I can prevent Jaws from speaking every punctuation mark?I am a little bewildered, say for example when we might wish to use the "setmail" for example when going on holiday, I think that it may be necessary to use brackets before and after vicsireland so we would need to know about the brackets by Jaws speaking them to us! Now say you are receiving instruction by email you may not want jaws speaking quotation marks as that would not be necessary for you to use when carrying out the instructed task! I am indeed very grateful to those who impart I.T instruction but I do find the use of quotation marks in instruction and list answers very offputting indeed. So to speak brackets but not quotes? Trust I haven't totally confused you all at this stage! All the best Tony Sweeney.
