Steve, has the National Library (Now RNIB/NLS) stopped producing Moon materials? There was actually a project, run by them, in the 1990's, to produce Moon for young children for whom braille was not a realistic option due to learning or tactual disabilities. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Plumpton, Stephen" <Steve.Plumpton@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, April 24, 2009 3:30 PM Subject: [vicsireland] Re: Query about Moon To ad to what tim and I wrote The Centre for Accessible Information is part of an international research team which is looking at methods and uses of touch reading. There are currently no producers of Moon in the UK. Apparently, there is an australian organisation who are producing some, but beyond that, not much. If I can be of any more help, get in touch. It is claimed by its supporters to be easier to understand than Braille, though it is mainly used by people who have lost their sight as adults, and thus already have knowledge of the shapes of letters. " It goes on to say that its popularity has diminished due to the high cost of production. Apparently there are only about 400 fluent Moon readers, and the system is largely unknown outside of the UK.
