I think my colleague would have mentioned it if they are. NLB is part of RNIB
now and so I would expect her to know that. Infact, one of the researchers is
an old NLB member of staff, so almost certainly not. They may have some stock
though.

Steve,

has the National Library (Now RNIB/NLS) stopped producing Moon materials?
There was actually a project, run by them, in the 1990's, to produce Moon
for young children for whom braille was not a realistic option due to
learning or tactual disabilities.

To ad to what tim and I wrote

The Centre for Accessible Information is part of an international research
team which is looking at methods and uses of touch reading.

There are currently no producers of Moon in the UK. Apparently, there is an
australian organisation who are producing some, but beyond that, not much.

If I can be of any more help, get in touch.

Steve

Hi Philip,

Wikipedia has the following to say about Moon:

"

The Moon System of Embossed Reading (commonly known as the Moon writing,
Moon alphabet, Moon type or Moon code) is a
writing system
 for the
blind,
using embossed symbols mostly derived from the
Roman alphabet
(but simplified). It is claimed by its supporters to be easier to
understand than
Braille,
though it is mainly used by people who have lost their sight as adults, and
thus already have knowledge of the shapes of letters.
"

It goes on to say that its popularity has diminished due to the high cost
of production. Apparently there are only about 400 fluent Moon readers,
and the system is largely unknown outside of the UK.

Tim

Hi vicsonians,

I have a friend who asked me about Moon. I think that it is a form of
braille. Can anyone tell me about it?
