got that quicktime issue sorted.
the reason i wasn't getting the quicktime link on its own was cos it comes
as part of the i tunes download .
anyhow my m4b files are now playing giving me a great expansion on my audio
book downloads.

Paul,
There are two versions of the Quicktime program - the free one and
Quicktime
pro. Both come from Apple. I know that the free one to download is
findable - it shows up in some Google search results for "Quicktime". The
latest version is 7.5. www.apple.com if all else fails.

i installed a program called sound taxi, thanks Albert, to play m4b files,
but i get an error when i go to convert the book file concerned saying
i need to install QuickTime 7. i have been searching the net in vain
looking
for a free version of this program but no luck. most sites start off with
a
free announcement and end up at step 3 with something like ' yours for
only
$99 per hour'.
anybody got any ideas? or is there another program i could use that won't
need QuickTime?
