Cearbhall, Tim, a thought:

If you can get into the Internet Properties of a message sent by Eamonn to the vicsireland list, which as received by you was blank, - 'Internet Headers for this message' under the Details Tab: somewhere in that mine of information, would there be a few nuggets that would explicate what's happening between the (three) contending parties?

Or, for comparative purposes, I could paste into a message to you, the copy of this information in a same message which as received by me was not blank, which you could compare with your copy of the Internet Headers information for that message?! (I believe that this is one way that a knowledgeable Tech Support would go about anylysing the problem.)

(I am using Windows Live Mail 2012.)

OK Tim,

I'll see if I can arrange that.

Hi Carbhall,

It would be great if the freelists guys could give some sort of logging or tracing of messages received from Eamon and see if they do some sort of strange processing based on specific formatting etc.

Tim,

It does look as though the sender's Outlook in the office suite is the problem. The great difficulty is nailing the examples of the problem.

Wouldn't you think that when one person, such as Eamonn, sends a blank message once that all his messages would be blank. As we know, this is not the case! So, how can we narrow the experience down so that we have a consistent pattern.

I did not see a reply from Eamonn to Paul's question as to whether he did the backspace key before writing his message. I am fearful that he will say that he did do the backspace and still his message came out blank! What do we do then?

Cearbhall

Hi Cearbhall,

I could stand corrected on this one, but pretty sure that I've seen new messages from Eamon appearing as blank also, i.e. it doesn't just happen with replies to messages.

Also, I wonder Eamon  what version of Outlook are you using?

A while Back mails from Stuart Lawler  showed the same problem.
However, when he upgraded to Outlook 365 the problem resolved itself.

Tim, Paul,

Would anyone have experience dealing with Microsoft or even better, a good contact on the Microsoft Office development team?
?

I would like to open a query with them on this problem now that I have gathered a range of evidence.

Flor and all,

The ^I character is only being seen in messages generated by the computer whose messages are blank.
The ^I character is a legitimate flag of the beginning of a header row in the header section of the email and is valid when followed by a carriage return or line feed. Since there is usually no carriage return until the end of the message body, the entire string from the ^I character to the end of the message text is treated as a broken header and deleted from the response.

We cannot find why this extra ^I character is being inserted after the subject line by some computers using Outlook but not by many other computers using the same version of Outlook.

When the backspace key is pressed, this ^I character is deleted and thus the problem is avoided.

All the best,

Cearbhall

This is a problem between Microsoft and Freelists and perhaps other older listservers. No one party accepts that it's its responsibility to fix it. I think that it may be an incompatibility between Outlook and Rich Text Format
(RTF) or a Unicode utf 8 issue, which used to crop up from time to time when I was using Outlook Express.

Hi again Eamonn.

Now, you've gone blank again!  Did you forget the backspace this time?
