Thanks for looking this up.
That thread sort of surrounds it (like the Zyn list seems to) but I still can't
find the specific point when Cal says he's making the fork. By the middle of
September the version numbers have already reached 0.010.
In early August he says "in the style of Yoshimi", but that is a reference to
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots- which Cal and his daughter
were great fans of.
Unfortunately Yoshimi's own repository is no help as Cal didn't move it from
his personal server until November or December that year.
I did find a post on the 24 September where Mark says he regards V 0.009 as a
fork, but that's not the one I'm thinking of. Also that version was out on the
14th or 15th I think.
To complicate matters further, I know of two places where progress was
reported and they weren't fully in sync - Zyn Archives & LAU archives. Also
there seem to be 'holes' and mis-matches, so I don't know if either has suffered
bit-rot.

This was on August 1 when Cal gave details of a patch from his local copy

had the great improvements to the Jack, ALSA MIDI and also added ALSA audio

If anyone can pin down the actual date of Cal's announcement I'd be very
grateful.
