I have found what could be described as the germination of Yoshimi's
embryo.
This was on August 1 when Cal gave details of a patch from his local copy
that
had the great improvements to the Jack, ALSA MIDI and also added ALSA audio
(which wasn't in zyn at all at that time).
...
In early August he says "in the style of Yoshimi", but that is a reference to
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots- which Cal and his daughter
were great fans of.

Those two are also the earliest mentions of the URL to Cal's personal page
(Aug. 1) and the beast's name (Aug. 6) I could track down.
What I may add is a post on SF from the 1st of September where Cal mentions that
the executable is called yoshimi to avoid conflicts with any installation of zyn.

That one seems to be the first occurrence of the name on SF but I don't trust their
search results very much.

The first mention of the name on LAU/LAD, apart from the "in the style of"-one
you already found, is from the 16th of September, version 0.008.

The first mail where Cal uses the term "fork" in relation to yoshimi on LA* is from
September 19.

Perhaps what you remember is a wording from his personal page. We'd have to
politely ask the NSA to provide us with a copy since it's not publicly archived.
