I am in total agreement with Barry Toner on this one, and it is the case that a
number of tech commentators who are normally Apple friendly have also mentioned
it, The good news is that customers have a solution of sorts and will
eventually have a solution by September 30th presumably in some production
modification when they buy later this year. More importantly Apple finally
acknowledged and dealt with the issue head on which is the right move.
However, we did not get this before Steve Jobs went at great pains to tell us
all that it wasn’t really that big a problem and the media and public ignorance
were really to blame.

In PR terms this has been quite damaging I think when you get under the skin of
it and indignation of Apple fan boys for even daring to criticise Apple/Steve
Jobs at all. It took well into 45 minutes of that press conference for Steve
Jobs to say “We are deeply sorry” for the problems iPhone 4 users were having
in the Q&A, this should have been his opening line and then moved on from there
and probably could have wrapped the thing up in five minutes. Steve Jobs is a
great salesman and asset to the Apple brand but it also shows a warning flare
that he could also be a liability at times as well.

As for the Microsoft reference (which is childish in the extreme) they have
been having their feet held to the fire for about the last decade more or less
continuously with small respite. In many cases quite rightly so.

Regards.
